Title: Reliability analysis and optimal maintenance operations for large-scale systems



Motivated by the emergence of large-scale renewable energy systems such as wind farms and solar parks, we present a new method to analyze the reliability of large-scale systems and find an optimal maintenance strategy for such systems. As major wind farms and solar parks are wearing out, the maintenance of such systems becomes an important issue. Optimal maintenance strategies should be  developed based on the accurate estimation of the dynamics of the system. The dynamics of such systems, however, is hard to capture because of the combinatorial characteristics of many units. We, therefore, propose a different approach deriving fluid and diffusion limits from the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. Based on the fluid limit that approximates the mean behavior of the system, we propose a condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategy that triggers maintenance activities based on threshold values of the fraction of units at each wearing state. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of our approach.



Young Myoung Ko is an associate professor of Industrial and Management Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University, and his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1998, 2000, and 2011, respectively. His research focuses on the analysis and optimization of large-scale stochastic systems and covers the domains of service systems, telecommunication networks, energy-efficient infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.
